Working with a large format 5x4 monorail field camera is unlike a traditional SLR camera, this type of camera has many moveable parts, allowing for greater image quality and image control.
Large Format 5x4 images are created in-camera using both manufactured silver based paper and hand-coated paper as the negative. Both techniques move away from the traditional photographic film and instead use paper.
The quality of the final image is also dependent on the paper used and how the liquid light emulsion is applied. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Japanese Awagami papers are archival and acid-free, they produce very different characteristics. Embracing traditional handmade techniques is time-consuming and unpredictable, however unexpected details that emerge, or in some cases, no detail at all, are very much part of the process.
